I need a hobby. Of course this site is a hobby, photography is a hobby, and occasionally coding is a hobby. The problem with all of these is that they require a computer. I need something I can do without sitting in front of a screen using a keyboard and mouse. Here are a few ideas I’ve had or people have recommended.
- Crocheting (it’s all the rage on Twitter, well that at knitting)
- Wood Carving – I don’t have a shop so I can’t use power tools, carving things out of blocks of wood could be fun
- Beer Brewing – I’m planning on doing this, I just need to get the funds saved to purchase a kit
- Drawing/painting – I’m a horrible artist, but it could be worth trying to improve
- Leather working
- Candy making – If I started this I would have to start an Etsy store or I would end up being 400 pounds.
- Pottery/Ceramics
Any other thoughts. My criteria is reasonable startup cost(<$100), can be performed in an apartments, and can’t involve a computer other than for research/recipe/how-to searching.

A couple things I like:
Postcrossing (www.postcrossing.com) Send postcards all over the world to random people then get cool ones back.
Letterboxing. This is not an indoor activity, but really fun. You get clues to where letterboxes are (think of them as hidden treasure.) You follow the clues to get the box, then stamp your log book and their letterbox with your personalized stamp. Tons of boxes available in the cities.
Guitar. Okay, I don’t play, but you could teach yourself and probably get a guitar on craigslist pretty cheap.
I crochet, knit, embroider and sew. None of them well, but I like them all. I think embroidery requires the least skill and is most useful to men, it is also cheapest.
Reading. Cheapest hobby of them all if you have a library card.
Kassie, Thanks for all the suggestions. I’ve been thinking about joining postcrossing, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Letterboxing sounds like fun, I may have to try that out.
Doniree, I’ll be trying this sometime in the near future. You’ll try some and let me know if it’s an utter disaster or not.
I vote beer.
You’re a guy… instead of crocheting/knitting, why not try chainmaile!? You’ll get to use pliers instead of needles! You can make some pretty neat stuff: http://www.mailleartisans.org/gallery/pics/10347dab_auto.jpg
