Thoughts and Link 12/1 Edition

It’s been a while since I posted anything. I took the entire Thanksgiving weekend off of participating in social media of any sort, including my blog. I posted approximatly 3 Twitter updates all weekend. It was a nice break, but now I’m back. Here are the latest thoughts and links from the world at large.
- If you ever wondered how not to write an about us for your website, check out the CIA’s HR page for details.
- Alexis posted this wonderful looking recipe for Corn and Chayote Soup. I may make it this week and let you know the results.
- Ana Marie Cox posts a letter she received and her response. I do hold out some hope for future generations.
- Via Kottke. Photography is for Jerkoffs funny but definitely not safe for work.
- I believe I’ve mentioned Margaret and Helen before, but as long as the two of them continue to write I’ll keep linking. Margaret’s last post is great, but her Thanksgiving letter to her family deserves a gold star. Here is an actual thought; this is why the Internet is great, where else can a couple of wise old ladies be heard by thousands of people, we all need to get our grandparents a blog.
- In case you wondered, the Timberwolves do have a playbook and it supposedly contains 75 plays. I’m not sure if this includes out of bounds plays or not but either way this is further proof Randy Whittman is insane.
- I went out to moto-i on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It was a great experience, really good food and the sake is as good as advertised. The atmosphere was more bar like than expected but I still give it my recommendation.
- Finally, a zoo in Japan discovered something any 15 year old who lives on a farm would know. You can’t mate two polar bears of the same sex. It’s just not possible.
Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Remember to avoid the stores at all costs for the next three weeks, and if you are traveling for the holidays be safe.

Tim O’Reilly’s Endorsement of Obama

I don’t usually devote entire posts to a single link, but as November 4th approaches I think everyone should read Tim O’Reilly’s Endorsement of Barack Obama. If you don’t know who Tim O’Reilly is, he is one of the most influencial people in the technology business. His company, O’Reilly Media, is the most respected publisher of books on technology. His endorsement reflects his interests, but is a wonderful argument as to why Barack Obama may not solve all of our problems but is the best choice to get us started in the right direction.

Minnesota Blogs I’m Currently Reading

As I continue my adventures with Twitter, I have focused a fair amount of my following on fellow Minnesotans. Due to this, I have slowly amassed a collection of blogs either written by a Minnesotan or are written about Minnesota. Here is a rundown of these blogs and a few thoughts.
- Lazy Lightning - This blog is written by a South Metro Resident Bill Roehl. It focuses on a variety of subjects regarding the Southern Metro. Some of Bill’s best posts in my opinion are his restaurant reviews which are a great source for those looking to try some new eats.
- Erik Michael Photography - This is a photo blog published by one of my college friends. He is a great outdoor and motor sports photographer and though he publishes infrequently, it is always worth the wait.

Updates and Thoughts

Sorry for neglecting the three of you that visit, I’m trying not to write about politics and it’s about all I have followed in the last two weeks. Hopefully I’ll come up with something while driving around for work today. In the mean time here are a few random observations from the Interwebs.
Why would EA put such invasive DRM on Spore? This will only limit sales, and result in mass pirating.
I got mentioned on Scoble’s blog due to a comment I left on Twitter.
Everyone is freaking out about the recent poll numbers, haven’t they heard of a convention bounce? (Sorry couldn’t resist)
I recently purchased a pro account on Flickr, check out my photostream for some great photos from Montana.
I’m working on a new theme for the site. It’s going to be a lot cleaner and lighter. I’m working on it in an attempt to develop my wordpress skills more than anything so it may be awhile before it’s ready for primetime.

Via Kottke.org
The Atlanta Monthly dropped their pay wall. Yet another great writing establishment to realize that traffic is important. Just a quick scan brought me to this article. Which takes a look back at the myths of the diamond business.
Now if only I could find a woman who would agree with me that diamonds are not nearly as great as common wisdom says they are.

Bin Laden’s Son

Omar Bin Laden, Osama Bin Laden’s son, warranted a piece by CNN. I had no idea that Bin Laden had a son (not that it should have surprised me), let alone that is son does not support his fathers terrorist tactics. I really liked his quote “Before they call it war; now they call it terrorism.” The sad thing is the majority of American’s don’t have an idea what he is talking about.
