Where, What, When 3:10

The photo I posted last week was obviously a bit tough. I plan on staying away from graffiti from now on, unless it’s something really neat. My friend Andrew did guess the location correctly, but never commented here, so he doesn’t get any official credit. The location is on 26th Ave between Pillsbury and Portland, drive by someday and check it out. It’s a nice burst of color for our dreary winter.

Hopefully I chose something a little easier this week, I like stumping everyone, but I also like when people actually guess.  So here goes.

Have a great Wednesday and I hope the rest of your week flies right by into the weekend.

Friday Five 11/20/09 Edition

Today’s five includes five local items you should read.  For those of you who don’t know, local means Minnesota.  They are all great pieces that came through my reader this week.

  • Art tells the Internet to stop censoring itself.  I look back on my use of $%#ing swear words with shame.
  • Sorni posts a map of the US explaining where certain people come from.
  • Amber posts what could be the funniest date recap I’ve read in recent history.
  • Kaeti contemplates selling her car, and makes a pretty convincing argument that she could survive.
  • Doniree posts a excellent post on risk taking and then announces that she is taking a big risk. (go wish her luck)

Happy Friday everyone, remember the workday isn’t far from being over.  Enjoy your weekend and I’ll see you back here next week.  (or later today, you never know)

An Open Letter to Surly Brewing

Hi Omar, Todd, and the rest of the crew:

I’m writing this letter because  I’m a huge fan of your beers. From Coffee Bender to Cynic, they are all delicious.  I’ve introduced a few friends to Furious, a couple to Bender, and one or two to Cynic and I intend to continue this.  You have a rabid fan base, and a growing market share.  I know there is a big waiting list for liquor stores that want to carry your beer. I’m happy for you, you’re local, a good company, and very much not mainstream. All of which make you awesome.

But you have a problem.  Your public relations or lack of PR is hurting you.  You may not notice it, and you may not notice it for years to come, but it will come back to bite you if you want to grow.  In the last few months, I’ve had three experiences that would have possibly kept me from continuing my patronage of your beer if you weren’t local and didn’t brew such good beer.  Now neither of these directly affects the quality of the product, but it does impact the perception of your company.  In a few years, if you want to continue to grow, this may be important.

The first happened a few months ago, around the time you released Hell for the second time.  First, at the time I, a new Surly drinker, thought this was your first release of this beer.  I headed off to Moto-i, excited to try out this new brew.  Well my friend and I walked into the bar, and it was apparent from the start that no one quite knew what was going on.  Only one bartender really knew what the plan was, the signage was minimal, and things just didn’t seem organized.  Things went smoothly overall, thanks to some great staff at Moto-i, but I was disappointed in the event, I expected a bigger deal to be made of the beer, maybe some giveaways, or at least some effort to make it a party.  Again, maybe I should not have had these expectations, but when an event is billed as a “Release Party”, the party aspect seems like a legitimate expectation.

The second thing that happened followed this very closely.  I’ll admit I was disappointed in Hell.  I wrote about it on my blog, and then commented on a post written over at The Captain’s Chair.  I stated that though I liked Hell, I was disappointed because I had expected something crazy and instead got a light, though tasty, beer.  During a back and forth on the Captain’s Chair’s post though, we continued to get defensive responses that seemed to complain about the perception we all had and that it’s not fair to you for us to have this perception.  Those of us commenting really wanted to give you advice to help and instead we got defensive answers.  Of course, the readers of Captain’s Chair are going to be big fans so I doubt you lost any drinkers, but an exchange like that with less enthusiastic fans might lose you a few customers.

Finally, Monday night I went to the Darkness Release Party at Hell’s Kitchen.  From the moment I walked in the door, it was obvious that at yet another release party, no one really knew what was going on.  Our bartender only knew he was selling Darkness, from what my companions said when the Surly reps came in the door you seemed confused and didn’t know how the bar was laid out.  Other than a band in the restaurant side, you wouldn’t have known anything was going on.  Also, like at Moto-i, no one from your brewery stopped by to say hi, even though I was at a table of six people all enjoying Darkness.

So, here is what I recommend.  Hire someone who knows a thing or two about public relations and event planning.  Your events should be exciting.  When you bill something as a release party it should feel like a party.  Giveaways are not necessary, but at least make those who set aside a Monday night to enjoy a glass of your beer feel like they are not just there to buy your product.  You also need to work on your public responses.  It is great that you do your own PR and you want to keep you voice as inline with your company culture as possible.  Just try and do this without sounding defensive.

I also think you need to look at your marketing.  As I mentioned when I wrote about Hell, I had a misperception due to the name that caused me to be unimpressed with Hell.  This would have been easy to avoid had you either named it something differently, or just spent a little time promoting what you were trying to do with the beer.  You are a company that has built itself into a box by brewing big beers.  You can get out of that box, just make sure your customers know when you step outside of that box so we aren’t surprised.

I am no expert so my advice may be complete crap, but I hope it’s not.  Keep up the good work and keep making great beers, just pair it with some better events and public relations.

Warmest Regards,

Conner McCall

Friday Five 10/2/09 Edition

I’m leaving town in just a few hours.  Me and a bunch of my college friends are going to a cabin up north.  It’s apparently going to be cold and possibly rainy which isn’t great, but we will make the most of it.  I’ll be disconnected once I arrive, minus a few potential phone calls to fellow travelers.  I’m looking forward to a few days away.

Today’s five is a list of things you should do in the upcoming week.  I’m hoping to get to most of them but it’s hard to say.  Especially Thursday since it includes two events.

  • Zombie Pub Crawl – Saturday – Dress like a zombie and drink beer with fellow zombies.  If this isn’t your idea of fun I don’t want to know what is.
  • Kick off concert for the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra – Sunday – It’s in Stillwater but should be excellent and worth the drive.  Did I mention it was free, and if you ask nicely I can drive if you are willing to show up early.
  • Loney Dear at the 7th Street Entry – Friday – It’s the Entry so it’s reasonable priced and it should be a great show.
  • Target Free Thursday at the Walker – Thursday – A interesting looking new exhibit opened last week and this my first chance to see it.
  • Brave New Workshop - Thusday, Friday, or Saturday – If you haven’t seen their latest show it only runs until the end of the month, don’t miss it.

Enjoy your weekend and stay warm, fall is here whether we like it or not.

Wednesday Where? #28

After over two months without one, they are back.  Not only am I blogging again, but I have a pretty good set of photos to get this back up and running.  Hope you’re ready for some mystery.

This one is part of a greater piece, but I think most of you will know where it is.  Remember, it’s located somewhere within the seven country metro, multiple guesses are permitted, and I’ll post the solution in next week’s post if no one guesses correctly.  Have fun.

Friday Five 9/11/09 Edition

It’s Friday, which is always a good thing, and it’s also the first weekend of the NFL season.  So here are a few things you can do besides watching football on Saturday and Sunday.

  1. Visit the Mid-Town Farmers Market – I visited this market last weekend and loved it.  It’s not as “nice” as Mill City Market but the prices seemed better and the tomatoes and onions that I got were awesome.
  2. Check out the Mill City Museum – I went there with my parents and it was awesome, be sure to check out the 19 minute video at the end.
  3. Make salsa or tomato sauce with the tomatoes you buy at the farmers market
  4. Check out the Hoot on Saturday night at The Music Box
  5. Head out to Como Zoo or check out an adventure pass to the Minnesota Zoo from your local library.

Of course I’ll be watching the games all weekend, I love the start of football season and wouldn’t miss it.  I’m still waiting for someone to hand me Gophers tickets for tomorrow so I can enjoy that beautiful new stadium.

Have a great weekend all, no matter what you are doing.

State Fair Recap or My Turn to Drink The Kool Aid

This is my first year fully active in the MN blogosphere and I’m shocked at how insane the state fair coverage is.  I mean I love it, but it’s kind of nuts.  But, that isn’t going to stop me from writing my own recap.

First I have to make a confession, I’m not a fair food lover, I don’t crave cheese curds, deep fried candy bars, or any other food throughout the year.  I don’t make plans about the first food booth I’m going to run to, I just wander and choose 2-3 things to keep me from collapsing (though I think you could live by calorie osmosis at the fair).

This year I went with my parents who were visiting me from Montana.  My dad is a huge fair food lover, and I tried a few new things because he was along.  Overall I only tried the following items.  Ratings are in parenthesis.

  • Australian Potatoes (3/5)
  • Cheese Curds (4/5)
  • Caramel Apple(4/5)
  • Fries (3/5)
  • Raspberry Milk Shake(5/5)
  • Roasted Corn (4/5)

I also had  Beer on a Stick from Summit. This is me and my friend Jason showing off our over priced sampler.  (It was damn tasty though, Horizon Red was my favorite which wasn’t surprising at all)

We spent a few hours wandering through the animal barns.  I hadn’t done this during my last two fair adventures and had a great time seeing how MN does things.  One thing that shocked me was the fact that the kids brought their pigs out into the public walk ways in the pig barn.  I don’t really know why it surprised me, but it seemed like a recipe for someone getting hurt.  Thankfully this guy wasn’t out and about.

These guys were pretty funny to watch.  One goat was chowing down on his neighbors hay and they got into a bit of a tussle

I ran into a high school friend who happened to be working at a booth in the Education building, after chatting for a bit we checked out the samples from Pastamore based on a Foursquare tip.  I loved the Meyers Lemon infused oil, though I have no idea what I would do with it.  We wandered up Machinery hill and I drooled over the giant trucks while the rest of Minnesota got excited about four wheelers and snowmobiles. Oh and did loved the old tractor exhibit.

We finished off the night with my parents getting a cone of Martha’s Cookies.  These were tasty as usual but still overrated in my opinion.  We ended up spending close to 10 hours at the fair, and by the end of the day I felt a lot like this kid who we encountered earlier in the day.

Even though I didn’t walk out of the fair feeling like I was going to pop, I had a great time.  I’m not much for really crowded places, but I can deal with it at fair time.  I took quite a few photos, if you feel like it stop by my State Fair set over on Flickr for piglets, giant stuffed animals, and a girl on stilts.

Wednesday Where? #27

Ok, technicly this should probably call this post Thursday There #1 but hey if I’m going to pretend this blog isn’t falling apart at the divs you need to keep pretending right along with me.

So anyone know where this was taken.  I’m guessing we’ll see a quick response but what do I know.

I realized this week that it’s been quite a while since I posted a statue here.  I always find statues interesting, their history is usually worth perusing.

Wednesday Where? #26

Well after a brief hiatus, Where is back.  This one comes to you from a far away land.  Okay, not that far away it is in the 7 country metro and should be recognizable to at least a portion of you.

Happy guessing and get outside and enjoy this weather when you are done.  It might be a bit humid, but compared to the last few days this is magical.

Happenings

In an attempt to keep my blog from growing mold and slowly disappearing I thought I should put something up here.  The last week has been fun, but I just didn’t have the ambition to write about anything. I thought I would put a quick listing of what I’ve been up to.

First, I went to my first night of Tech Karaoke last week.  I had been planning on going to this on several previous occasions, but instead of making it I kept either forgetting or having something come up.  I had a really good time, met some new people and even sang “Fat Bottomed Girls”.  I’ll definitely be making it to more of these.  I rode my bike to The Otter that night and it was kind of scary riding home.  Lightening was flashing over the city, but once I realized it was nowhere near me all I could think of is how much I wished I would have had my camera and tripod with.

I also tried out a couple food places recommended to me.  The first place I tried was the Cheeky Monkey Deli in St. Paul.  Art was the first person who told me about it, and I’ll be honest, I’m listening to Art from now on.  Not only is the place very unique, but the food was unreal.  I had the roast beef sandwich and for what you pay you get some damn tasty food.  I definitely recommend you check it out.  The second place I tried was Dave’s popcorn.  I had a craving for a chocolate shake earlier in the week and this was recommended by Angie as a great place to get a shake.  I stopped by Friday and was not disappointed.  It might not have been the best shake I’ve ever had but it was in the top ten.

Finally Saturday was incredible.  I started out the day biking to the Stone Arch Festive. I wandered around, ate a few unhealthy things and really enjoyed the art on display.  I’ve decided I should really work on my photography, maybe even take some classes, because I would love to compete with some of the artists on display there.  I also took in a show by the The Alrights, who are slowly becoming a favorite of mine.

The Crowd at Rock the Garden

The Crowd at Rock the Garden

Saturday evening was the kicker though.  I had purchased Rock the Garden tickets the day they went on sale and couldn’t have been more excited to go.  We ended up missing Solid Gold, which I was okay with as I had seen them live previously.  But we got there in time to see the other three bands.  Yeahsayer was a disappointment for me.  Though I enjoy their music, their live show was kind of boring.  They just didn’t really have any sort of presence in my opinion and their music isn’t overpowering in itself.  Calexico on the other hand blew me away.  Of the four bands that were playing they were actually the one I was least looking forward to seeing, but they proved me wrong.  Between the trumpets, the upbeat tempo, and the perfect music for a sizzling hot day I couldn’t have had more fun.  I’m definitely a bigger fan of Calexico due to seeing them live.

The capper to the evening was of course The Decemberists.  I had been looking forward to seeing them for quite some time.  I can understand how some people aren’t fans of them, but I can’t help but enjoy them.  I wasn’t sure about the fact they were playing The Hazards of Love from beginning to end, but it really worked.  I think I’ll enjoy listening to the album more now.  The end of their shows was awesome to, they played a couple songs from earlier CDs and then capped the evening off with a cover of Crazy on You.  It was really a perfect ending to the night and I thought they actually did a better job that Heart did.

That’s my last week in a nutshell, hope you had a great one and hopefully I’ll be back to keeping your days full of insanely boring things soon.  This heat is draining any ambition I have and I”ve been super busy at work.  I’m going to try very hard to get a Where? up tomorrow, so hopefully I’ll hear from you then.
