A naming system

I think I started running a “server” in my home sometime around 2009. I honestly can’t recall what I used it for, but I know I upgraded my PC and then took the old system into our basement and hooked it up as a headless server. I have no idea what I gave it as a hostname it but I assume it was something boring.

Once I had my own apartment, I remember thinking a bit more about what I was going to name my server and desktop. I do not know why, but I ended up naming things after locations in the Redwall book series. I know I used both Redwall and Mossflower. I probably used a few others but it was early 2010’s so there was not nearly as many devices connected to my home network.

During my last rebuild, during Covid. I switched things up. I did some thinking and ended up deciding that everything was going to have a hostname related to food. Food is magic and I love cooking and eating. It makes naming things a bit more fun.

I don’t name every device, but it is fun when I do. sometimes it is something I just ate, sometimes it’s just a food I love. I have named systems, fungi, bucatini, burrito, cheeseburger, baobun, and burrito. The great thing is that the list of options is almost endless. I also named my wi-fi networks after food items. It is fun to tell people they can use “pepperoni pizza” to connect. A lot more fun then “Asus_WR3332”.

Would I use this if i was provisioning systems for an organization? No, the names are not meaniful to anyone but me. But for my home network the only person who cares is me, so I can have fun if i want to.

Funny enough, I just switched to using Wasabi as my offsite backup service. I did not choose it due to the name, but it was a nice perk.
